King's Meals Since all other meals except dinner had to be procured by the students themselves, the Steward sold provisions to be prepared and eaten in the rooms. Occasionally, other sources of food would present themselves, however. Food from home was always appreciated, and the local farmers would visit the College with waggons of cheeses, cider, apples and other fruit. Trout from Chester and partridges during hunting season added variety to students' diet, while Windsor mushrooms, collected in pillow slips [covers], made a royal feast. It must be confessed that occasional raids were made upon local farmers for turkeys, geese, and ducks, since poultry was served so rarely in Commons Hall.
