Nesbitt Street Pond Hockey 1940s

#1#2

George Sweet (shown center of #1)
grew up around Nesbitt Street in Windsor, Nova Scotia. His father snapped
these photos of his sons and friends playing a pickup game of pond hockey
on "The Island" (as the Nesbitt Street area is known to locals).
George tells us that a nearby drainage ditch ( a few feet from where
the dog is in the foreground of picture #1
, in front of the fence in the foreground of #2)
was blocked off in November allowing flooding of this field which led
to a fine frozen surface some two feet deep in places. After snow storms
a group of boys would get together with shovels and brooms to clean
off their outdoor "rink" for hockey.

Seen in the background, on the banks of the Avon River,
is the house (no longer standing) of Bennett Smith, owner of Windsor’s
once famous Bennett Smith Shipyard in the mid-late 1800s.

Joseph "Joey" Robertson of Nesbitt Street who
went on to play in the AHL and the WHA learned his early skills here.

Thank you George Sweet for sharing these beautiful pictures
with us.
