King’s College Record

Jan
1879
[first issue]

Probably we may refer to the changeable and
disagreeable weather, the paucity* of our notes on sports and Athletic games in
this first issue. It is to be hoped that before the winter is over there may be
a snow-shoe club in operation. Earl Dufferin in addressing one of the large Snow-Shoe
Clubs of Canada, observed that he thought they might easily solve the great and
vext question of the North-West Passage, by traveling on foot to the North Pole.
Without attempting such a feat, our students might expect much advantage from
expeditions over the snowy country. Even though they might miss the gold medal
of R.G.S. (Royal Geographic Society), they would find themselves when they leave
King’s better able to compare in physique, growth and powers of endurance with
the average alumnus of Home [English] institutions, where athletic sports are
becoming more and more popular.
[*paucity – insufficiency]
